Andrea Chiesi: biography

Andrea Chiesi was born in 1966 in Modena. He is definitely one of the most interesting painters of the last generations. He developed an analysis of the contemporary landscape, of time and memory, using the technique of oil painting on canvas,  in a meticulous, almost manic manner, sometimes inclined to the exasperation of structures, sometimes inclined to a study on light, shadow and half-shadow. At the same time, he draws figures and industrial subjects with a black-purplish ink which melts the them into a liquid and silent space.
During the early Eighties he has been active among punk counter-culture groups and independent music performers. In this period he starts working as a designer for many fanzines and underground periodicals, as well as exhibiting in community centres.
His first works, realised with black- purplish ink are an emblem of those years, and are animated by figures and places connected in several ways to that environment.
Afterwards, his activity developed and started to express itself through wider-ranging works, which will lead him to take part, in 1990, in the Biennale dei Giovani Artisti dell'Europa Mediterranea in Marseilles. He also takes part in several groups exhibitions in Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Modena, where in 1993 one of his works is shown among the new acquisitions of the Galleria Civica.
In 1996 he holds a solo exhibition titled "Corpo a corpo" in the community centre  S.Q.O.T.T. in Milan. 1997 is a very prolific year for Chiesi, who is invited to many events, such as the exhibition "Aperto 97", at the Trevi Flash Art Museum and the solo exhibition "Touch me", organised by Luca Beatrice, at the Galleria ES in Turin.
1998 is a very important year as well: Chiesi takes part in the group exhibition "Nuovo ritratto italiano", at the Spazio Consolo in Milan. He works with Giovanni Lindo Ferretti and the C. S. I. , who write the lyrics and the music for his important solo exhibition dedicated to "L'Apocalisse di Giovanni", curated by Luca Beatrice, Valerio Dehò and Gianluca Marziani, in the Chiostri di San Pietro in Reggio Emilia. In that same year he is mentioned by the magazine Arte as one of the ten emergent artists of the young Italian scene.
Many other galleries host his solo exhibitions: in 1998 the Sergio Tossi  (Prato) and the Nickel (Seebruck). In 1999 the Marazzani Visconti Terzi  welcomes an exhibition curated by Gianluca Marziani; in 2000 the Galleria Es in Turin welcomes "Siderale". In the same year Chiesi holds another exhibition, curated by Maurizio Sciaccaluga, at the Marco Mazzi  in Lodi. In October the Maurizio Corrainio (Mantua) hosts his solo exhibition“G.R.U.”
In 2004 he exhibits at the Fondazione La Fabbrica, Losone, Locarno, at the Otto Gallery  in Bologna and at the Lipanjepuntin, in Trieste, where he had already stood out in 2001.
In 2006  his works are shown at the Allegretti Contemporanea in Turin, while in 2007 the Guidi&Schoen (Genoa) hosted his solo exhibition "Kali Yuga".
At the same time he participates in many group exhibitions, such as “Paesaggi italiani” (1999) at the Museo Virgiliano di Virgilio (Mantua); in that same year he exhibits, together with Bazan and Galliano, at the Spazio Aperto of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Bologna.
In 2000 he is one of the artists hosted by the summer exhibition “Profili della giovane pittura contemporanea in Europa”in La Spezia; in November he takes part in the exhibition “Sui Generis”, curated by Alessandro Riva and held at the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan; in 2003 he participates in the Praha Biennale, as well as showing his works in  New York, Berlin and Brussels. In 2004 he takes part both in the Anteprima Quadriennale in Turin and in the exhibition “Vernice” in Villa Manin, Passariano (UD); in the same year he is awarded with the Premio Cairo. In 2005 the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin hosts “Clip'it”.
In the summer of 2007 he shows his works at the LVIII edition of the "Premio Michetti- Nuovi Realismi", curated by Alessandro Villa in Francavilla al Mare (CH).
In 2008 he is awarded with the I Premio Terna for the category Megawatt.
The following two years confirm his status as an important artist on the international scene, with many personal (such as "Beyond Time", 2009, New York) and group exhibitions (such as "Pagine da un Bestiaro Fantastico" and "Art Chicago", both in 2010, in Modena and Chicago respectively).
He currently lives and works in Modena.
