Matteo Basilè

Since the middle of the 1990s, Matteo Basilé has used manipulated digital photography as his favoured instrument for composing portraits set initially in abstract contexts and subsequently in settings full of references to the history of art and cinema.

At the centre of his work are the themes of gender diversity, transvestitism, the tension between sacred and profane, and that between corporeity and power.

For critic Gianluca Marziani, Basilé’s development has a "coherent visionary content", while Gabriella Arrigoni writes that in his works "nature, modified by digital manipulation, alters its very essence".
